Best Change to the Place I Live 2009 or You CAN Go Home Again.

The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge. Day 13.

What’s the best change you made to the place you live?

I’m a city girl and I move often so I’m always making changes to the place I live if not changing the actual place I live. Over the past ten years I’ve lived in SeattleSanFranciscoLosAngelesLondonNewYorkSanFrancisco and loved it. I love the energy, the fast pace and big city life.

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered I had a desire to move back to my hometown, Newport Beach, CA. This idea was so foreign to me that I wondered where this thought came from. Who invaded my brain to plant it there?

I mean, I knew I’d never live in Newport Beach again. (Just like I knew I’d never live in The South after undergrad at Alabama and one year after graduation I was back in school in Atlanta. I know, I know, NEVER say never.)

This desire to move to home was such a surprise to me that I knew it was my intuition or my soul leading me there. I had no choice but to go.

About halfway through 2009 I traded this

and moved  home. A lot has changed in Newport Beach since I was in high school. Some of my favorite spots are no longer and new roads exist where nature used to live. There is more traffic, more plastic surgery and less of the laid back beach town vibe.

Shortly after the move I realized, if I had one week to live and could choose how to spend it, THIS is exactly what I would be doing. I’d be hanging with my family in Newport Beach.

After living in some not-so-close-to-home places and seeing my family only a couple of times a year, it feels good to share daily life rather than frantically catching up before someone is catching a flight.

I can’t articulate exactly why I am in Newport Beach except that I know in my heart of hearts this is an important time for me to reconnect with my family and my roots.

Who knows how long I’ll stay, but for right now this is exactly where I’m meant to be. For now, I’m home.

  1. a beautiful affirmation of the importance of following intuition. I’ve said the same thing to myself about never going home. I’ll try to keep an open mind…
